BIS Registration

Bureau of Indian Standards commonly known as BIS. In 2012, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) came up with the view of safety certification of the various consumer Electronic and IT Products which are in use of each and every household & offices.

Considering the safety and well being of Indian Citizen, MeitY and successfully Implemented Compulsory Registration order 2012 which was brought in action by the Bureau of INDIAN Standards for the Electronic and IT Goods under Scheme II of Schedule II. Initially only 15 products were added in the scope of CRS also called Compulsory Registration Scheme which is extended with the product count of 77 in total.

Under this scheme and successful evaluation of the application, BIS grants approval to use CRS Mark on the product label along with it’s Registration Number, BIS-Website Reference, Indian Standard Number, Model Number, Technical Ratings, Brand Name and some more basic instructions.

Key points:

  • Applicants for this application can be Original Equipment Manufacturer , Brand Owners and Importers.
  • Appointment of Indian Representative is mandatory in case of foreign manufacturers.
  • If manufacturer is not having any liaison office in INDIA then either a Indian brand office or A third Indian Company will be nominated as the Local Representative in the application.
  • Unique registration number is issued to the one manufacturing location for the single brand and product category.

BIS Certification

Bureau of Indian Standard aims to create and maintain quality standards in industrial production. To achieve it’s aim, BIS implemented ISI Certification for electrical, mechanical and various other industrial products in 1956.

ISI stands for Indian Standard Institute which is the former name of Bureau of Indian Standard.

Products covered under mandatory requirement of ISI registration includes Cement Products, Household electrical Goods, Dry Batteries, Food & Related Products, Oil Pressure Stoves, Automobile Accessories, Cylinder-Valves-Regulators, Medical Equipment, Stainless Steel Products, Electrical Transformers, Electrical Motors, Capacitors and Chemicals & Fertilizers.

A legislature was passed out in 1986 which authorised BIS to offer a voluntary product certification to manufacturers. This means that any manufacturer based whether in India or Overseas, can apply for product certification under Scheme I of schedule II.

Indian Manufacturer can apply for the BIS Certification for ISI Mark through two different procedures i.e., via Simplified Procedure or Normal Procedure.

Radio devices operating in licensed frequency bands require a separate set of licenses.
